Principles of Good Practice for Translation of Electronic Clinical Outcome Assessments

Several members of HPR (Health Psychology Research Ltd) are also members of ISOQOL (International Society Of Quality Of Life), its Translation and Cultural Adaptation Special Interest Group, and associated working groups. Dr Anita Bradley-Gilbride is a co-author on a recent publication by one of the working groups, which was set up to establish principles of good practice for the translation of electronic clinical outcome assessments (eCOAs).

The need for developing an understanding of the intricacies of the concurrent translation and cultural adaptation and electronic migration of COAs crystallized when it was determined that the existing scientific literature outlining good practice recommendations consider these two processes independently. Two surveys were developed to gather information about the experience of key stakeholders, namely language service providers, electronic clinical outcome assessment providers and developers / copyright holders, with this concurrent process. The collective expert feedback was essential in formulating good practice recommendations, which address operational aspects, such as actively involving all key stakeholders in defining timelines, as well as scientific aspects, for example following the copyright holder guidelines for the electronic migration process and screenshot reviews.
